Residencies at M-Cult
Vallila Residency
Currently M-Cult hosts a residency apartment in the Vallila neighbourhood, gifted by M-Cult's former director Minna Tarkka. The apartment has one room, a kitchen and a bathroom. We use the residency apartment in multiple ways:
We organise residencies within M-Cult's different programming strands and support artists' research and production.
We run exchange residency initiatives with international partners.
M-Cult's members can use the apartment for their working periods in Helsinki or for their collaborators.
The residency is also made available to other organisations, initiatives and individuals who need to stay in Helsinki, at below-market rent.
Please get in touch if you need a residency apartment in Helsinki. We prefer stays of at least one month, but shorter periods can also be discussed.

Residencies 2026–2027
M-Cult’s international residencies connect artists in Finland with partners in the UK, Taiwan and the Nordic-Baltic region. The exchanges are part of our Finnish Media Art Networks project, carried out with AV-arkki and the Finnish Light Art Society FLASH.
Recoding Realities
Helsinki – London
The residency supports artistic practice that imagines more equitable worlds where people have agency over technology and care for their environments.
In collaboration with arebyte Digital Art Centre and the Finnish Cultural Institute in the UK and Ireland.

Gabriella Presnal (Finland) – London, October 2026
A Finnish-American multidisciplinary artist combining 360 video, photogrammetry and hand-drawn animation to explore spatiality and cultural memory.
Chipo Mapondera (Zimbabwe) – Helsinki, November 2026
An artist and creative technologist reimagining AI and immersive technologies through Indigenous knowledge, ritual and ceremony. In Helsinki, they will continue KUCHEMA, a research project on Indigenous water knowledge and alternative AI design.
In Between: Wetland and Park Forest
Helsinki – Hsinchu
One Finnish and one Taiwanese artist research two urban nature sites, Helsinki’s Central Park and the Siangshan Wetland in Hsinchu, and present work in both locations.
In collaboration with Accton Art Foundation, Art Site of Railway Warehouse and Zone Sound Creative.

Sophia Mitiku (Finland) – Hsinchu, September 2026
A Korean-Ethiopian sound artist, singer and composer exploring land-based knowledge, memory and migration through electroacoustic composition, field recordings and voice.
Ciwas Tahos (Taiwan) – Helsinki, October 2026
Working with performance, moving image, ceramic sound sculpture and kinetic installation, Ciwas is developing Finding Pathways to Temahahoi, which reimagines an Atayal oral story about a community of women and gender-diverse people.
Residing Non-linear Technologies and Sonic Worldings
Helsinki – Turku
A residency for artists from the Nordic-Baltic region working with sound, media and digital arts. Two artists will each spend two months between Helsinki and Turku, with public presentations in both cities.
In collaboration with Arte artists’ association / Titanik Gallery. Supported by Nordic Culture Point.

History
M-Cult has worked with artist residencies throughout its history, offering opportunities to artists working with media, technology and socially engaged practice.
These residencies have been there to offer space for research for new works and produce new inventive artistic projects, many times in connection with communities and groups in Helsinki. These residencies have resulted in multiple new connections to local and international contemporary art fields, and artworks produced and presented locally and internationally with our partners and beyond.
Residencies have been organised within many different programming strands such as EMAP European Media Art Platform, Maunula Collaborations, and Central Park Commissions and Archive.
