m-cult's call for collaborative media art residencies received a total of 382 proposals. Coming from 63 countries, the artists represented the full spectrum of art fields. Besides a variety of media and electronic art genres the proposals included collaborative and media projects of visual art, performance, dance, theatre – as well as architecture, design and literature.
Such an enthusiastic response speaks of a wide interest in media and collaboration in contemporary art – and of a will to ground artistic practice in specific social contexts. The majority of the artists wished to work in Helsinki's Maunula neighbourhood, envisioning new films, installations, mapping projects, urban walks, performances and other processes to be realized with the residents.
The jurying reached its final phase on February 1 when all artists received notifications on their proposal. Discussions will continue with shortlisted artists to evaluate project feasibility and the final selections will be published in mid-February.
M-cult will be working in Maunula in 2016-18 alongside the Finnish National Theatre. Residents in Maunula look forward to the art pilots which already made the front page of the local newspaper!
