TransEurope Slow

Take a virtual bike ride and explore the development of European cities through the eyes of the urban cyclist. TransEurope Slow, a project by Sergio Galán and the Uncoded collective negotiates modern cities and finds places that tell contemporary stories which move beyond tourist attractions, stereotypes, and city brands. Your journey will seamlessly switch from Liverpool to Helsinki and Madrid, linking the cities and highlighting their differences, and similarities.

The footage for this installation was collected in a series of a community-based workshops, in which locals guided the Uncoded Collective throughout the streets of European cities on bikes, telling stories as they made their way through the city. This process allows viewers to piece together a diverse narrative about their cities, communicating to visitors what the city feels like to them; what they love, what they hate, what has changed, what makes it unique, and how the city’s identity informs their own.

TransEurope Slow by Uncoded Collective / Sergio Galán and José Roncero Siles was installed on the window of Made in Kallio cafe at Vaasankatu, Helsinki 14 in August 22-25, 2013.

The Helsinki footage workshop was realised in collaboration with the Pyöräpaja bike collective.

The project was co-produced for the Connecting Cities programme 2013 by Medialab-Prado, Madrid, FACT Liverpool and m-cult Helsinki.
