“How will climate change shape our familiar surroundings into something entirely new? Looking at just one flower, what does it need to survive and how might those needs be impacted by climate change?

These are some of the questions Annelie Berner (DK) in collaboration with Monika Seyfried (PL) seek to answer in their project Plant Futures, which they have been developing during their EMAP residency at M-Cult in 2023.

During their residency the artists investigated the possible futures of plants in Helsinki area. They observed plants in the Haltiala forest, in the lab and at the botanical archives with the support of local experts in order to understand and uncover the stories of climate change on a micro level.

The artists built a work in progress installation for the SYSTEMS exhibition at ARTSI museum and are now in the process of finalizing their work. PLANT FUTURES is a visualisation of their chosen plant using near and far future projections of the local region's climate in order to generate new inputs for the plant. Annelie and Monika also shared their research based process with local community at Maatila project space during Earth Forces event Conscription.

Plant Futures will be published during 2024.

Plant Futures is realised within the EMAP - European Media Art Platform’ s 2023 residency programme, co-funded by the EU.
