Read_me, the first international festival dedicated to software art was brought from Moscow to Helsinki in 2003 by its curators Alexei Shulgin and Olga Goriunova. Read_me 2.3 presented software-based artistic and critical projects as well as talks and performances on code-based experimentation and action.
The software art repository Runme.org was developed as a proposal platform for the festival and it remains on the net as a database presenting new categories of software art. Runme.org was developed by Alex McLean with Amy Alexander, Alexei Shulgin and Olga Goriunova and with contributions from Pit Schultz, Florian Cramer, Matthew Fuller, The Yes Men, and Thomax Kaulmann.
The festival publication Read_me 2.3 reader includes expert discussions on software art genres and features on the projects presented during the festival.
The festival exhibition and sessions took place at media centre Lume, May 30-31, 2003. The event was co-produced with the curators by The Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art NIFCA, Media centre Lume and m-cult.
